Super Bowl XLVII Weekend Travel Guide (New Orleans)

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

I have previously extolled the virtues of New Orleans, which you can read about here. On top of all of the great things there are to do during a normal event weekend, the Super Bowl adds another layer of intrigue and fan engagement.

The Verizon Super Bowl Bouelvard at Woldenberg Park concert stages, popular food offerings and a variety of other fun and interactive events. It is adjacent to Jackson Square, which will be home to more Super Bowl activities.

Sunday

  • Gameday Fan Plaza (Champions Plaza) – A pregame area for ticketholders with interactive games, food, and Super Bowl merchandise.
  • Super Bowl XLVI (Mercedes Benz Superdome) Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers. Need I say more?

Points of Interest in New Orleans area:

  • National World War II Museum – This is the story of America at war — on land, in the air and at sea — told in a way that will fully engage the senses, the mind and the heart.
  • Jackson SquareRenamed in honor of the Battle of New Orleans hero Andrew Jackson, is a timeless attraction in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans. This famous landmark facing the Mississippi River is surrounded by historic buildings, including the St. Louis Cathedral, the Presbytere and Cabildo (Louisiana State Museums).

Restaurants and Nightlife:

  • Mother’s Restaurant – Check out their renowned Ferdi Special po boy. Make sure to try to one of the gumbo or jambalaya apps as well..
  • Cafe DuMonde – Just outside of Jackson Square is this food landmark. Beignets, fried dough smothered in powdered sugar, at Café DuMonde are a necessary part of any New Orleans visit. .
  • Jacques Imo’s – Authentic cajun food uptown near Tulane. An absolute feast, so save space.
  • Surrey’s Cafe – A favorite of organic food lovers, looking for a healthy and hearty breakfast.

  • French Quarter – Bourbon Street and the hundreds of bars that encompass the French Quarter will be packed during the weekend. Pop in and out until you find a place that suits your likes.
  • Pat O’s – Originator of the New Orleans favorite “The Hurricane.” The dueling pianos are worth the wait for a table. Be mindful, more than two Hurricanes can be detrimental to your reputation..
  • Frenchmen Street – A jazzy, offbeat alternative to the French Quarter. Plenty of live music and artsy people.
  • dba – One of Frenchmen Street’s many terrific live music joints.
  • Harrah’s – Press your luck at Harrah’s. Just make sure you don’t bet your Super Bowl tickets away.
