Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

For more information about planning or booking a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact Jared Cooper at Jared.Cooper@SPWtravel.com, (646) 397-5350, or via twitter at @SportsPowerWknd.

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

I have previously extolled the virtues of Indianapolis, which you can read about here. On top of all of the great things there are to do during a normal event weekend, the Super Bowl adds another layer of intrigue and fan engagement.

Points of Interest in Indianapolis area:

  • NCAA Hall of Champions – The NCAA Hall of Champions boasts two-levels of all-new interactive exhibits featuring highlights, artifacts and much more.

Photo courtesy of Indianapolis Motor Speedway

  • Indianapolis Motor SpeedwayThe Hall of Fame Museum is located on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a National Historic Landmark, about five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis. There are more than 75 vehicles on display at any given time, including more than 30 Indianapolis 500-winning cars. The museum was established in 1956, 45 years after the first Indy 500.
  • Circle Centre Mall – While you may not have any shopping to do, there is a Colts team store as well as some memorabilia stores that sports fans might want to take a look at. Plus, there is a Chick-fil-A in the food court, which is a very welcomed sight.

  • St. Elmo’s Steakhouse – This restaurant has been an Indianapolis institution since 1902 and features a cocktail sauce on their shrimp cocktail that will knock your socks off. Biter beware. In addition to some great food, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will see an NFL owner, coach, GM, college football player, or NFL analyst at one table or another.
  • Oceanaire Seafood Room – A seafood place located at Monument Circle, a nice downtown area east of the Capitol Building.
  • Oakley’s Bistro – A favorite of NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances Peter R. Davis.
  • Black Diamond – A 10-minute trip to the north side of Indy, this BBQ joint is a favorite of USA Gymnastics CEO Steve Penny.
  • Paradise Bakery – A nice breakfast spot in Monument Circle.
  • Café Patachou – Breakfast spot located just south of the Indiana State Capitol at Capitol and Washington Streets. This spot has been receiving accolades from Indianapolis publications for more than a decade, and if the locals like it so should you. Order the cinnamon toast.
  • Indianapolis Colts Grille – For good food and a great sports bar.
  • Champions Sports Bar in the Marriott – I am especially fond of this place because of my shortly-held all-time high score at the Pop A Shot during the 2008 NFL Combine. My record has sadly since been broken.
  • Howl at the Moon – A dueling piano bar and live music joint that always provides a good time.
  • 1933 Lounge – For a cool atmosphere and a great cocktail. Tucked between St. Elmo’s and Harry & Izzy’s.

Top Sports Power Weekends: June 17-19

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The Dallas Mavericks are the NBA Champions, and tomorrow night’s Game 7 will decide the Stanley Cup as Boston travels to Vancouver with the title on the line. When the weekend arrives, both the NBA and NHL will have concluded their seasons, leaving Major League Baseball and Soccer as the two leagues in action until the NFL resumes play. Tournaments in soccer and golf also add spice to the summer weekend’s, most notably this weekend with Father’s Day on the horizon.

Who knew a mid-June weekend in the nation’s capital could provide such sports punch? The Beltway Series gets underway as the Orioles travel from Baltimore to nearby Washington, D.C. to take on the Nats at Nationals Park. Sunday brings the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup to RFK Stadium, potentially with the US Men’s National Team taking the pitch there. But this weekend in the area is all about the U.S. Open. The tournament concludes annually with a Sunday final round on Father’s Day. This year the 111th Championship will take place at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Interleague play resumes with the Angels traveling to Citi Field to take on the much improved New York Mets. Last week, Citi Field hosted its first soccer match with much success. This week, the local soccer moves to the New Meadowlands Stadium for the Gold Cup quarterfinals. 3. Chicago

Friday
  • Yankees at Cubs
Saturday
  • Yankees at Cubs
Sunday
  • Yankees at Cubs

The baseball gods were smiling down at this Yankees-Cubs series until Derek Jeter tweaked his calf and put his chase for 3,000 hits on hold. He quite possibly could have (and can still) reached the milestone at Wrigley Field, which would have been a treat for the fans and for SPW travelers. Nonetheless, a weekend set between two of the most historic teams in American sports will still provide some incredible excitement, and make for a great last-minute Father’s Day gift (see link below).
