Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

For more information about planning or booking a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact Jared Cooper at Jared.Cooper@SPWtravel.com, (646) 397-5350, or via twitter at @SportsPowerWknd.

Another great Thanksgiving option, this time in the heart of Texas. The Cowboys continue their Thanksgiving tradition, this time hosting their division rivals. Top Sports Power Weekends: February 18-20

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Only the NBA Finals create a bigger buzz than the All-Star weekend festivities, and that might even be in question with the NBA All-Star Game taking place in Hollywood. It is no surprise that LA tops the list of Sports Power Weekends for February 18-20, but numbers two and three on the list may surprise you. As we approach March Madness, expect to see college basketball front and center on these lists.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of February 18-20. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Los Angeles

Friday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open
Saturday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open
Sunday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open

With all of the pomp and circumstance that regularly accompanies the NBA All-Star Weekend, putting the festivities in LA will likely blow all previous attempts out of the water. The Rookie Challenge takes place on Friday night, the dunk contest and three-point shoot out take place during the All-Star Saturday Night lineup, and the 60th  NBA All-Star Game takes place Sunday at the Staples Center. In nearby Pacific Palisades, the Northern Trust Open will be underway for a mid-day visit.

2. Raleigh, NC

Friday
  • Flyers at Hurricanes
Saturday
  • Boston College at UNC
  • Florida State at Wake Forest
Sunday
  • Georgia Tech at Duke

It is as if the college basketball gods are handing down a gift this weekend. Spreading out the ACC schedule so that a fan can catch a UNC game on Saturday and a Duke game on Sunday is just too much to pass up. Throw in some NHL action on Friday night, and a North Carolina SPW is in order.

3. Louisville-Lexington, KY

Friday
  • UConn at Louisville
Saturday
  • South Carolina at Kentucky
  • Fordham at Xavier
Sunday

Fans in Kentucky will no doubt take umbrage with falling behind Raleigh on this list, and they have a point. With a Big East battle coming to the newly minted KFC Yum! Center on Friday night, and an SEC clash at Rupp Arena on Saturday, this is a bluegrass weekend you just don’t want to miss. Hit up Graeter’s Ice Cream to put the cherry on top, literally.

4. New York City

Friday
  • Rangers at Devils
  • Harlem Globetrotters
Saturday
  • Pitt at St. John’s
  • Kings at Islanders
  • Harlem Globetrotters
Sunday
  • Flyers at Rangers

The weekly contender for the top spot falls down to number four this week, but there is still plenty to see in NYC. The Harlem Globetrotters take their family friendly entertainment to Madison Square Garden on Friday and Saturday, and MSG also hosts the Johnnie’s and a classic Rangers matchup. Get familiar with the World’s Most Famous Arena.

5. Chicago

Friday
  • Blue Jackets at Blackhawks
Saturday
  • Villanova at DePaul
Sunday
  • Penguins at Blackhawks

The defending Stanley Cup champs welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to the United Center on Sunday, anchoring a weekend that sees another Blackhawks game on Friday, and Villanova, one of the Big East’s top teams, come into the windy city to face DePaul.

Also see: Chicago City Guide

6. Milwaukee

Friday
Saturday
  • Seton Hall at Marquette
Sunday
  • Penn State at Wisconsin

The state of Wisconsin is still riding high off of the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl win. Bask in reflective glory and join the cheeseheads as they cheer on Marquette on Saturday in Milwaukee and Wisconsin on Sunday in Madison.

7. San Francisco-Oakland

Friday
Saturday
  • Avalanche at Sharks
  • USC at Stanford
Sunday
  • UCLA at Cal

No NBA? No problem. The San Jose Sharks welcome the Colorado Avalanche into The Tank, and the southern California basketball teams take on their northern California Pac-10 counterparts.

Also see: San Francisco-Oakland City Guide

8. Miami

Friday
  • Red Wings at Panthers
Saturday
Sunday
  • Clemson at Miami

OK, so the Heat are out of town, but hey, it is a holiday weekend in the middle of February. You are telling me you don’t want to be in Miami? Check out the BankUnited Center and the BankAtlantic Center for some great action on Friday and Sunday. Bank on it!

9. New Orleans

Friday
Saturday
  • Marshall at Tulane
Sunday
  • Florida at LSU

These are certainly not the sexiest college basketball matchups of the weekend, but the fact that the weekend will be based out of Nawlins more than makes up for this. Some great Cajun food and jazz music will spice up this weekend nicely.

Also see: New Orleans City Guide

10. Buffalo

Friday
  • Blues at Sabres
Saturday
  • Rutgers at Syracuse
  • Senators at Maple Leafs
Sunday
  • Capitals at Sabres

Friday and Sunday Sabres games bracket the weekend, and Saturday provides some options. Basing out of Buffalo, you can either make the trip to Toronto for the Ottawa Senators-Toronto Maple Leafs game, or head to Syracuse as the Orange host Rutgers at the Carrier Dome. Having to decide between those two is what we call a good problem.

Top Sports Power Weekends: January 21-23

Monday, January 17th, 2011

The sad truth is that Sports Power Weekends anchored by football are coming to an end. With over a month until Spring Training, it is the NBA, NHL and college basketball that rule the roost. That being said, Chicago and Pittsburgh are bringing the heat in the middle of winter, with the AFC and NFC Championship Games coming to town.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of January 21-23. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Chicago

Friday
Saturday
  • Cavs at Bulls
  • Pitt at DePaul
  • Marquette at Notre Dame
  • Ohio State at Illinois
Sunday
  • Packers at Bears
  • Flyers at Blackhawks
  • Wisconsin at Northwestern

What a weekend for Wisconsin. After checking out the hometown Bulls on Saturday night, the cheese heads can check out the Badgers in Evanston at noon taking on Northwestern before heading to Soldier Field for the 2:30 local time NFC Championship Game between bitter rivals the Packers and Bears.

Also see: Chicago City Guide

2. Pittsburgh

Friday
Saturday
  • Hurricanes at Penguins
Sunday
  • Jets at Steelers
  • USF at West Virginia

After the Jets toppled the Patriots, Steelers fans cancelled their plans to travel to New England, and instead get to the host second best Sports Power Weekend option, with the Penguins taking on the Hurricanes the night before the AFC Championship Game. The Terrible Towels will be waving at full force.

3. Denver

Friday
  • Lakers at Nuggets
Saturday
  • Bruins at Avalanche
Sunday
  • Pacers at Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony’s days in Denver may be numbered, but that shouldn’t preclude you from enjoying a weekend in the Rocky Mountain State. Mix some skiing with trips to the Pepsi Center to see the Nuggets and Avalanche throughout the weekend.

4. New York City

Friday
  • Pistons at Nets
Saturday
  • Mavericks at Nets
  • Rutgers at Seton Hall
Sunday
  • Notre Dame at St. John’s
  • Panthers at Devils
  • Sabres at Islanders

This is more of a New Jersey Sports Power Weekend, but setting up home base in NYC allows you to take public transportation to easily access the events in Jersey. Check out the Prudential Center in Newark and some college basketball at Madison Square Garden, while seeing the sights in Manhattan.

Also see: New York City Guide

5. Boston

Friday
  • Jazz at Celtics
Saturday
  • Tennessee at UConn
  • Louisville at Providence
Sunday

A New England Patriots win would have vaulted this weekend into the top two, but as it is, this is still a pretty good weekend in Boston and the local area. A Celtics game at TD Garden on Friday followed by a UConn out of conference game against Tennessee in Hartford makes for a nice weekend in New England.

6. Atlanta

Friday
  • Hornets at Hawks
Saturday
  • Rangers at Thrashers
  • Mississippi State at Georgia
Sunday

This is another weekend that would have been strengthened by the top-seeded team holding serve in the NFL playoffs. As it is, the Falcons lost, but Atlanta still offers the Hawks and Thrashers, as well as Georgia in an SEC battle an hour away in Athens.

Also see: Atlanta City Guide

7. Washington, D.C.

Friday
  • Suns at Wizards
Saturday
  • Clemson at Maryland
  • Celtics at Wizards
Sunday

The Wizards may be near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but John Wall is one of the handful of NBA players that you have to see live. In addition, seeing Maryland at the Comcast Center is one of the top college basketball venues in the country.

Also see: Washington, D.C. and Baltimore City Guide

8. Miami

Friday
  • Lightning at Panthers
Saturday
  • Raptors at Heat
Sunday

The NHL game on Friday night might not set the world on fire, but it is a nice appetizer to the Heat game on Saturday. When you get a chance to see the Big Three in action, you do it.

9. Los Angeles

Friday
  • Bob Hope Classic
Saturday
  • Warriors at Clippers
  • Stanford at UCLA
  • Cal at USC
  • Bob Hope Classic
Sunday
  • Bob Hope Classic

Two hours from Los Angeles in La Quinta is the Bob Hope Classic, a nice option outside of the city. Back in LA, the Clippers, UCLA and USC all hold court. That and the beautiful weather make this a good option in late January.

Also see: Los Angeles City Guide

10. Buffalo

Friday
  • Islanders at Sabres
Saturday
  • Villanova at Syracuse
Sunday

Buffalo isn’t a place you would normally associate with a good option for a late January visit, but with the Sabres hosting the Islanders on Friday night, and a less than three-hour drive to Syracuse for the Villanova-Cuse game on Saturday, the area makes for a good weekend option.
