Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

2. Boston

Friday
  • Mavericks at Celtics
Saturday
  • Sharks at Bruins
  • Virginia Tech at Boston College
Sunday
  • Magic at Celtics
Monday
  • Beanpot Tournament

The best team in the East, the Boston Celtics host two of the league’s top teams on Friday and Sunday when the Dallas Mavericks at Orlando Magic come to town. Saturday features a Bruins game at the TD Garden, and the first games of the annual Beanpot Tournament drop the puck on Monday.

3. Pittsburgh

Friday
  • Sabres at Penguins
Saturday
  • Cincinnati at Pittsburgh
Sunday
  • Michigan at Penn State

With the Pittsburgh Steelers looking for their record seventh Super Bowl title, Pittsburgh will be buzzing about the big game. The atmosphere will be great at any of the sports bars for Super Bowl XLV on Sunday, but on Friday night check out the Penguins at Consol Energy Center, and on Saturday Pitt hosts Cincinnati in a Big East clash.

4. Philadelphia

Friday
  • Knicks at 76ers
Saturday
  • Stars at Flyers
  • West Virginia at Villanova
  • Rhode Island at Temple
Sunday

Basketball now reigns supreme in Philly with the NFL season over and the Phillies weeks away from taking the field. The Sixers host the New York Knicks on Friday night, and West Virginia visits an always-strong Villanova squad the next day. The Flyers take the ice against the Stars on Saturday as well.

5. New York

Friday
  • Panthers at Devils
Saturday
  • Senators at Islanders
  • UConn at Seton Hall
Sunday
  • 76ers at Knicks
  • Pacers at Nets

You can make this an all New Jersey SPW if you choose, with the Devils, Seton Hall and the Nets hosting games on Friday through Sunday. It is a Knicks game on Sunday against the visiting Sixers that serves as the centerpiece for this weekend, however.

6. Washington, D.C.

Friday
  • Magic at Wizards
Saturday
  • Hawks at Wizards
  • Wake Forest at Maryland
  • Providence at Georgetown
Sunday
  • Penguins at Capitals

With all the exciting NBA and college basketball action taking place in the D.C. area, it is the Winter Classic rematch of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals that makes this weekend so strong. If Sidney Crosby is back on the ice, the matchup between him and Alex Ovechkin actually overshadows two Wizards games and college basketball action at Maryland and Georgetown.

7. Phoenix

Friday
  • Thunder at Suns
  • Phoenix Open
Saturday
  • Wild at Coyotes
  • Phoenix Open
Sunday
  • Phoenix Open

The Phoenix Open in Scottsdale has a party feel to it and is a fun atmosphere on a nice day in Arizona. Having Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in town to play the Phoenix Suns only adds to the allure of this weekend.

8. San Francisco

Friday
  • Spurs at Kings
Saturday
  • Bulls at Warriors
  • Arizona at Cal
  • Arizona State at Stanford
Sunday

The Bay Area provides some star power with the NBA best San Antonio Spurs traveling to northern California to face the Sacramento Kings in the state’s capital, and Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls taking on Monta Ellis and the Warriors in Oakland. Cal and Stanford also host the Arizona schools in Pac-10 action on Saturday.

9. Miami

Friday
Saturday
  • Virginia at Miami
Sunday
  • Clippers at Heat

Let Virginia at Miami on Saturday serve as an ACC appetizer for Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers taking their talents to South Beach to visit the Big Three of LeBron, DWade and Bosh and the Miami Heat. Miami is not a bad place to be in early February, to say the least.

10. Milwaukee

Friday
Saturday
  • Pistons at Bucks
Sunday
  • Michigan State at Wisconsin

Just like in Pittsburgh this weekend, Super Bowl XLV is all the rage. Warm up your weekend in frigid Wisconsin with the Detroit Pistons-Milwaukee Bucks game on Saturday. Sunday would be all about the Green Bay Packers if not for a sure-to-be hard-fought Big Ten battle between perennial powers Michigan State and Wisconsin in Madison. The state motto may be changed this weekend to Go, Pack, Go!

Top Five Sports Power Weekends: December 24-26

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Christmas weekend does not offer a great deal of Sports Power Weekends, but there are still some great travel options out there. With college basketball taking a study break, it is up to Week 16 of the NFL, the NBA and NHL to carry up the SPW flag.

I present to you the five best Sports Power Weekends of December 24-26. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Pittsburgh –> Cleveland

Thursday
  • Panthers at Steelers
Friday
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame (Canton)
Saturday
Sunday
  • Ravens at Browns
  • Timberwolves at Cavaliers

This Sport Power Weekend requires a bit of flexibility and creativity. Starting in Pittsburgh, catch the Panthers-Steelers game on Thursday night at Heinz Field. Friday morning make the two-hour drive to the birthplace of football, Canton, Ohio. Tour the Pro Football Hall of Fame and catch up on your NFL history. Either later on Friday or Saturday morning, drive one hour to Cleveland for the rest of the weekend. Saturday is an open day; you can visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens visit their old home and take on the Cleveland Browns. Football and family (or friends) on a holiday weekend sounds nice.

2. Oakland

Friday
Saturday
  • Trailblazers at Warriors
Sunday
  • Colts at Raiders

The Bay Area provides a nice one-two punch with the Warriors hosting the Portland Trailblazers at Oracle Arena, followed by Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts trekking into the Black Hole. Bring out your spiky shoulder pads with the insulated lining.

3. Los Angeles

Friday
Saturday
  • Heat at Lakers
Sunday
  • Suns at Clippers
  • Ducks at Kings

The term “White Christmas” doesn’t mean much in southern California. Expect it to be 75 and sunny, an apt climate for a weekend visit by the Heat and Suns. One of the most anticipated NBA games of the season takes place on Christmas day as LeBron, Wade and Bosh invade the Staples Center. It is up to Kobe and Pau Gasol to hold court as the Lakers host the Miami Heat. Sunday sees two of the most exciting players in the league on the same court: Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers.

4. Tampa Bay/Orlando

Friday
Saturday
  • Celtics at Magic
Sunday
  • Seahawks at Buccaneers

Another anticipated Xmas NBA matchup takes place in Orlando as the “Big 4” of the Boston Celtics visit Dwight Howard and the Magic at the newly minted Amway Center. On Sunday, an hour and a half southwest of Orlando the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Seattle Seahawks, a game with NFC playoff implications, at Raymond James Stadium.

5. New York

Friday
Saturday
  • Bulls at Knicks
Sunday
  • Maple Leafs at Devils
  • Canadiens at Islanders
  • Richmond at Seton Hall

With the Knicks making a resurgence and becoming relevant in New York again, this game on Saturday against the Chicago Bulls at Madison Square Garden has meaning for just about the first time since Michael Jordan’s second retirement. On Sunday, check out the comfortable confines of the Prudential Center in Newark, an easy train ride from Manhattan, to catch the Devils host the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Honorable Mention:

The best of the rest are “one-off” Sports Power Weekends. Sunday in each of these cities brings a significant NFL game in a great city to visit during the holiday weekend. Unless Miami is your choice here, make sure you bundle up!
