Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Michigan fans have plenty of options if they want to follow the team in Ann Arbor and on the road this upcoming season. Rivalry games dot the schedule from beginning (Notre Dame), to the middle (Penn State and Michigan State), to the end (Ohio State), and you can be there every step of the way!

Click on the links below to reserve your spot for these incredible Michigan football experiences!

Michigan vs. Notre Dame (September 7)

Michigan will host Notre Dame on September 7, 2013 for the second ever night game at Michigan Stadium and the final home game against the Fighting Irish in the foreseeable future. There are no games scheduled between Michigan and Notre Dame after 2014, so this will be their final meeting in Ann Arbor for quite some time.

Don’t miss out on this incredible weekend, with options including game tickets, a two-night hotel stay, a private Friday night Big House tour, transportation, an autographed Denard Robinson photo, and much more!

Michigan at UConn (September 21)

From New York City:  Michigan fans in the northeast have a great opportunity to see Michigan live without having to travel a great distance. We will have buses from New York City to East Hartford for this road game, arriving three hours before kickoff for tailgating purposes.

Bus spots are available for $60, and snacks will be provided. You are able to bring beverages on the bus.

The trip includes game tickets, a two-night hotel stay, an opportunity to meet former Michigan football greats, SPW gear and more!

* * *

Michigan at Northwestern (November 16)

Join Michigan fans for what promises to be an incredible weekend in Chicago, as the Wolverines take on the Northwestern Wildcats on November 16, 2013 at Ryan Field.

Northwestern likes to think of themselves as Chicago’s Big Ten team, but with more than half the stadium draped in Maize and Blue, you can help prove that Michigan is actually Chicago’s Big Ten team!

The trip includes game tickets, a two-night hotel stay in downtown Chicago, a Michigan fan tailgate, and other great inclusions.

* * *

Michigan at Iowa (November 23)

Join Michigan fans on an unforgettable away game trip to Iowa City, as the Wolverines take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on November 23, 2013 at Kinnick Stadium.

Michigan will look for its second win under Brady Hoke in the rivalry and knock Urban Meyer down a peg. The Buckeyes schedule may see them coming to Ann Arbor without a loss on the record. This game will have not only Big Ten Championship implications, but possibly BCS implications as well.

Game tickets, a two-night hotel stay, pregame transportation, and more great Michigan football experiences are now available.

Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

For more information about planning or booking a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact Jared Cooper at Jared.Cooper@SPWtravel.com, (646) 397-5350, or via twitter at @SportsPowerWknd.

Points of Interest in Indianapolis area:

  • NCAA Hall of Champions – The NCAA Hall of Champions boasts two-levels of all-new interactive exhibits featuring highlights, artifacts and much more.

Photo courtesy of Indianapolis Motor Speedway

  • Indianapolis Motor SpeedwayThe Hall of Fame Museum is located on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a National Historic Landmark, about five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis. There are more than 75 vehicles on display at any given time, including more than 30 Indianapolis 500-winning cars. The museum was established in 1956, 45 years after the first Indy 500.
  • Circle Centre Mall – While you may not have any shopping to do, there is a Colts team store as well as some memorabilia stores that sports fans might want to take a look at. Plus, there is a Chick-fil-A in the food court, which is a very welcomed sight.

Restaurants and Nightlife:

  • St. Elmo’s Steakhouse – This restaurant has been an Indianapolis institution since 1902 and features a cocktail sauce on their shrimp cocktail that will knock your socks off. Biter beware. In addition to some great food, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will see an NFL owner, coach, GM, college football player, or NFL analyst at one table or another.
  • Oceanaire Seafood Room – A seafood place located at Monument Circle, a nice downtown area east of the Capitol Building.
  • Oakley’s Bistro – A favorite of NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances Peter R. Davis.

  • Paradise Bakery – A nice breakfast spot in Monument Circle.
  • Café Patachou – Breakfast spot located just south of the Indiana State Capitol at Capitol and Washington Streets. This spot has been receiving accolades from Indianapolis publications for more than a decade, and if the locals like it so should you. Order the cinnamon toast.
  • Indianapolis Colts Grille – For good food and a great sports bar.
  • Champions Sports Bar in the Marriott – I am especially fond of this place because of my shortly-held all-time high score at the Pop A Shot during the 2008 NFL Combine. My record has sadly since been broken.
  • Howl at the Moon – A dueling piano bar and live music joint that always provides a good time.
  • 1933 Lounge – For a cool atmosphere and a great cocktail. Tucked between St. Elmo’s and Harry & Izzy’s.

March Madness the perfect opportunity for a Sports Power Weekend

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

What is so great about the NCAA Tournament – besides everything – is that with the games slated for particular times on either Thursday and Saturday, or Friday and Sunday, fans can plan their weekends and budget their time accordingly. Also great is the one-day gap in games that allows the fan to explore the city they are in, and even see another sporting event or two if time permits.

For this reason, the NCAA Tournament (with the conference tournaments bundled in) is the greatest event on the calendar for a Sports Power Weekend. Check out the tournament sites below with the dates of the NCAA Tournament games being played, as well as any other sporting event that can be attended on the same weekend.

To customize a Sports Power Weekends package to any of these sites, contact info@SPWtravel.com for pricing and options.

April 2-4 (Final Four and National Title Game)

Houston Friday
  • San Antonio Spurs at Houston Rockets
  • Reese’s College All-Star Game
  • PGA Shell Houston Open
Saturday
  • Final Four
  • PGA Shell Houston Open
Sunday
  • Atlanta Hawks at Houston Rockets
  • PGA Shell Houston Open
Monday
  • National Title Game

Houston officials and schedule-makers did a great job bringing in the Shell Houston Open this weekend, as well as having two Rockets games in between the Final Four and Title Game at Reliant Stadium. This is a Sports Power Weekend option that not only offers a tent-pole event in the Final Four, but also a fun spectator event like a PGA Tournament, and two NBA games for the basketball nuts.

Top Sports Power Weekends: March 11-13

Monday, March 7th, 2011

March Madness is officially upon us as conference tournaments get underway this week. They come to a head this weekend with automatic bids and Big Dance dreams on the line. Throw in some Spring Training in beautiful Phoenix and central Florida, as well as NBA and NHL action, and the Sports Power Weekends are plentiful in mid-March.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of March 11-13. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. New York City

Friday
  • Big East Tournament semifinals
  • Los Angeles Clippers at New Jersey Nets
Saturday
  • Big East Tournament finals
  • New York Islanders at New Jersey Devils
Sunday
  • Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks

There are nearly one dozen teams in the Big East alone fighting for a spot or positioning in the NCAA Tournament. With such a high level of competition, the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden is the best place to be during conference tournament weekend. Throw in a Knicks game on Sunday featuring their new star Carmelo Anthony, and this is a great Sports Power Weekend option in mid-March.

2. Los Angeles

Friday
  • Pac-10 Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Pac-10 Tournament finals
Sunday
  • Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks

The Pac-10 Tournament returns to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, giving the UCLA and USC fans a bit of a home court edge. Don’t tell that to Arizona and Washington, however. They aim to take the conference crown and ride the momentum into the Big Dance.

3. Atlanta

Friday
  • SEC Tournament quarterfinals
  • New Jersey Devils at Atlanta Thrashers
Saturday
  • SEC Tournament semifinals
  • Portland Trail Blazers at Atlanta Hawks
Sunday
  • SEC Tournament finals

The SEC Tournament at the Georgia Dome coincides with Thrashers and Hawks games at Philips Arena in the Georgia World Congress Center over the weekend. Those are some nice options for the Florida and Kentucky fans, among others, who may be making the trip to Atlanta.

4. Greensboro, NC

Friday
  • ACC Tournament quarterfinals
  • Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats
Saturday
  • ACC Tournament semifinals
  • Columbus Blue Jackets at Carolina Hurricanes
Sunday
  • ACC Tournament finals

Greensboro is about an hour and a half from both Charlotte and Raleigh, making it possible to check out the Bobcats or Hurricanes games taking place on Friday and Saturday. No worries if you don’t make that day trip, though. The ACC Tournament provides enough excitement as it is, especially with the Duke and UNC crowds coming out in force.

5. Indianapolis

Friday
  • Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals
Saturday
  • Big Ten Tournament semifinals
Sunday
  • Big Ten Tournament finals

Contrary to much of the outside general opinion about Indianapolis, this town knows how to put on events. With indoor walkways connecting many of the hotels to the mall and convention center, visitors rarely have to brave the cold to get where they are going. Downtown not only features Lucas Oil Stadium, but also Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers and the Big Ten Tournament. The Big Ten is deep and has been cited as the best conference in the country by a number of analysts, so this weekend has a chance to be special.

6. Kansas City

Friday
  • Big XII Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Big XII Tournament finals
Sunday

The Sprint Center may lack an anchor tenant, but that is not reflective of the world-class facility that this is. Kansas City will host its 10th Big XII Tournament, more than any other city, and their event staff will be auditioning for a potential NBA team in the coming years. Be sure to check out the College Basketball Hall of Fame and some of their great BBQ joints while in town.

7. Phoenix

Friday
  • Spring Training
Saturday
  • Spring Training
Sunday
  • Magic at Suns
  • Spring Training

While the top college basketball conference tournaments dominated the first six spots on the list, a familiar entry makes it way in at number seven. Cactus League action in the Phoenix area is a great way to whet your appetite for Opening Day, and Sunday brings a change in gears as the Orlando Magic head west to play the Suns at the US Airways Center.

8. Tampa Bay

Friday
  • Senators at Lightning
  • Spring Training
Saturday
  • Spring Training
Sunday
  • Spring Training

The St. Pete Times Forum will be the place to be on Friday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning push for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, Grapefruit League action in Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater make for a relaxing and fun rest of the weekend.

9. Washington, D.C.

Friday
  • Hurricanes at Capitals
Saturday
  • Clippers at Wizards
Sunday
  • Blackhawks at Capitals

The Verizon Center will get plenty of play this weekend with two Capitals games bracketing a Wizards game on Saturday. You will get a chance to see some of the brightest stars in sports as Alex Ovechkin takes the ice twice for Caps, and rookie phenoms John Wall and Blake Griffin hit the hardwood as the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Wizards.

10. Las Vegas

Friday
  • Mountain West Tournament semifinals
  • WAC Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Mountain West Tournament finals
  • WAC Tournament finals
Sunday

The MWC and WAC both hold their conference tournaments in Las Vegas, in the Thomas & Mack Center and Orleans Arena, respectively. I would suspect that fans heading to these tournaments are doing so more for the location than the basketball itself, but to each his own. Enjoy the festivities.
