Top Sports Power Weekends: February 18-20

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Only the NBA Finals create a bigger buzz than the All-Star weekend festivities, and that might even be in question with the NBA All-Star Game taking place in Hollywood. It is no surprise that LA tops the list of Sports Power Weekends for February 18-20, but numbers two and three on the list may surprise you. As we approach March Madness, expect to see college basketball front and center on these lists.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of February 18-20. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Los Angeles

Friday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open
Saturday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open
Sunday
  • NBA All-Star Weekend
  • Northern Trust Open

With all of the pomp and circumstance that regularly accompanies the NBA All-Star Weekend, putting the festivities in LA will likely blow all previous attempts out of the water. The Rookie Challenge takes place on Friday night, the dunk contest and three-point shoot out take place during the All-Star Saturday Night lineup, and the 60th  NBA All-Star Game takes place Sunday at the Staples Center. In nearby Pacific Palisades, the Northern Trust Open will be underway for a mid-day visit.

2. Raleigh, NC

Friday
  • Flyers at Hurricanes
Saturday
  • Boston College at UNC
  • Florida State at Wake Forest
Sunday
  • Georgia Tech at Duke

It is as if the college basketball gods are handing down a gift this weekend. Spreading out the ACC schedule so that a fan can catch a UNC game on Saturday and a Duke game on Sunday is just too much to pass up. Throw in some NHL action on Friday night, and a North Carolina SPW is in order.

3. Louisville-Lexington, KY

Friday
  • UConn at Louisville
Saturday
  • South Carolina at Kentucky
  • Fordham at Xavier
Sunday

Fans in Kentucky will no doubt take umbrage with falling behind Raleigh on this list, and they have a point. With a Big East battle coming to the newly minted KFC Yum! Center on Friday night, and an SEC clash at Rupp Arena on Saturday, this is a bluegrass weekend you just don’t want to miss. Hit up Graeter’s Ice Cream to put the cherry on top, literally.

4. New York City

Friday
  • Rangers at Devils
  • Harlem Globetrotters
Saturday
  • Pitt at St. John’s
  • Kings at Islanders
  • Harlem Globetrotters
Sunday
  • Flyers at Rangers

Get familiar with the World’s Most Famous Arena.

8. Miami

Friday

Saturday
Sunday

OK, so the Heat are out of town, but hey, it is a holiday weekend in the middle of February. You are telling me you don’t want to be in Miami? Check out the BankUnited Center and the BankAtlantic Center for some great action on Friday and Sunday. Bank on it!

9. New Orleans

Friday
Saturday
  • Marshall at Tulane
Sunday
  • Florida at LSU

These are certainly not the sexiest college basketball matchups of the weekend, but the fact that the weekend will be based out of Nawlins more than makes up for this. Some great Cajun food and jazz music will spice up this weekend nicely.

10. Buffalo

Friday
  • Blues at Sabres
Saturday
  • Rutgers at Syracuse
  • Senators at Maple Leafs
Sunday
  • Capitals at Sabres

Friday and Sunday Sabres games bracket the weekend, and Saturday provides some options. Basing out of Buffalo, you can either make the trip to Toronto for the Ottawa Senators-Toronto Maple Leafs game, or head to Syracuse as the Orange host Rutgers at the Carrier Dome. Having to decide between those two is what we call a good problem.

  • Penguins at Capitals

With all the exciting NBA and college basketball action taking place in the D.C. area, it is the Winter Classic rematch of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals that makes this weekend so strong. If Sidney Crosby is back on the ice, the matchup between him and Alex Ovechkin actually overshadows two Wizards games and college basketball action at Maryland and Georgetown.

  • Thunder at Suns
  • Phoenix Open
Saturday
  • Wild at Coyotes
  • Phoenix Open
Sunday
  • Phoenix Open

The Phoenix Open in Scottsdale has a party feel to it and is a fun atmosphere on a nice day in Arizona. Having Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in town to play the Phoenix Suns only adds to the allure of this weekend.

8. San Francisco

Friday
  • Spurs at Kings
Saturday
  • Bulls at Warriors
  • Arizona at Cal
  • Arizona State at Stanford
Sunday

The Bay Area provides some star power with the NBA best San Antonio Spurs traveling to northern California to face the Sacramento Kings in the state’s capital, and Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls taking on Monta Ellis and the Warriors in Oakland. Cal and Stanford also host the Arizona schools in Pac-10 action on Saturday.

9. Miami

Friday
Saturday
  • Virginia at Miami
Sunday
  • Clippers at Heat

Let Virginia at Miami on Saturday serve as an ACC appetizer for Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers taking their talents to South Beach to visit the Big Three of LeBron, DWade and Bosh and the Miami Heat. Miami is not a bad place to be in early February, to say the least.

10. Milwaukee

Friday
Saturday
  • Pistons at Bucks
Sunday
  • Michigan State at Wisconsin

Just like in Pittsburgh this weekend, Super Bowl XLV is all the rage. Warm up your weekend in frigid Wisconsin with the Detroit Pistons-Milwaukee Bucks game on Saturday. Sunday would be all about the Green Bay Packers if not for a sure-to-be hard-fought Big Ten battle between perennial powers Michigan State and Wisconsin in Madison. The state motto may be changed this weekend to Go, Pack, Go!
