Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

For more information about planning or booking a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact Jared Cooper at Jared.Cooper@SPWtravel.com, (646) 397-5350, or via twitter at @SportsPowerWknd.

NFL Draft Weekend in NYC (April 26-29, 2012)

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Two weeks from tonight, the first round of 77th annual NFL Draft will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City at 8 PM. Since NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell changed the format of the Draft to a three-day primetime event, the Draft has garnered significantly more media attention and fanfare than in years past.

Tickets to the Draft are free and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, except for the allotment for sale via packages from NFL on Location (sold out for 2012). Tickets to Thursday, April 26 (Round 1, 8 PM ET) and Friday, April 27 (Rounds 2-3, 7 PM ET) will be harder to come by, as they are in primetime and demand is high, but tickets can be had by lining up at Radio City at the appropriate times (see here for last year’s info as we wait for 2012 updated info). Fans should have no problem getting walk-up tickets on Saturday at 11 AM ET for Rounds 4-7.

Concourse at Yankee Stadium

Prior to Thursday night’s draft, the invited top Draft prospects and a number of NFL stars and celebrities will walk the red carpet into Radio City, will flashbulbs popping and fans screaming. There is a palpable buzz in the air in New York City on Draft weekend, and NFL fans are filled with hope and optimism for the 2013 season.

Fans visiting NYC for the weekend have more than just the Draft to look forward to, however. The Detroit Tigers will visit Yankee Stadium for the first time in the 2012 season to face the New York Yankees, in a battle of AL powers. Friday night’s game overlaps with Rounds 2-3 of the Draft, but Saturday’s 4:05 PM start is definitely doable after spending the early part of the afternoon at Day 3 of the Draft. Sunday’s game is another opportunity to have a great day at the ballpark, as the game starts at 1:05 PM.

Make sure to check out the Yankees Museum and grab a steak sandwich from Lobel’s when you make your way up to the Bronx for the game.

Red Bull Arena for Thierry Henry's first MLS game.

Another event this weekend you can consider is the New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution game on Saturday at 3:30 at Red Bull Arena. The atmosphere in the stadium is fantastic and it is just a beautiful soccer-specific stadium, perfect for its MLS host.

Fans of several different sports can find great events in and around New York City on the weekend of April 27-29. What a perfect opportunity to have yourself a Sports Power Weekend!

Points of Interest in Indianapolis area:

  • NCAA Hall of Champions – The NCAA Hall of Champions boasts two-levels of all-new interactive exhibits featuring highlights, artifacts and much more.

Photo courtesy of Indianapolis Motor Speedway

  • Indianapolis Motor SpeedwayThe Hall of Fame Museum is located on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a National Historic Landmark, about five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis. There are more than 75 vehicles on display at any given time, including more than 30 Indianapolis 500-winning cars. The museum was established in 1956, 45 years after the first Indy 500.
  • Circle Centre Mall – While you may not have any shopping to do, there is a Colts team store as well as some memorabilia stores that sports fans might want to take a look at. Plus, there is a Chick-fil-A in the food court, which is a very welcomed sight.
  • White River State Park – The park not only offers the trees, trails and waterways that you would expect from any state park, but also attractions such as the Indianapolis Zoo and the Indiana State Museum.
  • Bankers Life Fieldhouse – Home of the Indiana Pacers, the Fieldhouse also hosts high-profile concerts and events.
  • Victory Field – Home of the Indianapolis Indians, the Pittsburgh Pirates AAA affiliate.

Restaurants and Nightlife:

  • St. Elmo’s Steakhouse – This restaurant has been an Indianapolis institution since 1902 and features a cocktail sauce on their shrimp cocktail that will knock your socks off. Biter beware. In addition to some great food, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will see an NFL owner, coach, GM, college football player, or NFL analyst at one table or another.
  • Oceanaire Seafood Room – A seafood place located at Monument Circle, a nice downtown area east of the Capitol Building.
  • Oakley’s Bistro – A favorite of NCAA Director of Championships and Alliances Peter R. Davis.

  • Paradise Bakery – A nice breakfast spot in Monument Circle.
  • Café Patachou – Breakfast spot located just south of the Indiana State Capitol at Capitol and Washington Streets. This spot has been receiving accolades from Indianapolis publications for more than a decade, and if the locals like it so should you. Order the cinnamon toast.
  • Indianapolis Colts Grille – For good food and a great sports bar.
  • Champions Sports Bar in the Marriott – I am especially fond of this place because of my shortly-held all-time high score at the Pop A Shot during the 2008 NFL Combine. My record has sadly since been broken.
  • Howl at the Moon – A dueling piano bar and live music joint that always provides a good time.
  • 1933 Lounge – For a cool atmosphere and a great cocktail. Tucked between St. Elmo’s and Harry & Izzy’s.
