Top Sports Power Weekends: April 22-24

The first round of the NBA and NHL playoffs is heating up, and it is creating some travel opportunities for sports fans, particularly in big cities that have teams in both sports in the playoffs. Add in MLB home weekends and the occasional MLS game, and it is hard to find a reason not to travel.

1. Philadelphia

Friday
  • Sabres at Flyers (Game 5)
Saturday
Sunday
  • Heat at 76ers (Game 4)

Philly is the only city in the country that brings you an NBA and NHL playoff home game this weekend. The Flyers host the Sabres in a pivotal Game 5, and the 76ers look to make their way back into their series against the Heat. The Wells Fargo Center has an intense slate of games on their hands this weekend.

2. New York

Friday
  • Celtics at Knicks (Game 3)
  • Diamondbacks at Mets
Saturday
  • Diamondbacks at Mets
Sunday
  • Celtics at Knicks (Game 4)
  • Diamondbacks at Mets

The Knicks have lost two heartbreaking games to the Celtics in Boston, but Madison Square Garden will be rocking on Friday night as Game 3 comes back to New York. Game 4 takes place on Sunday, and all the while the Mets are in town against the Diamondbacks as well.

3. Washington/Baltimore

  • Rangers at Capitals (Game 5)

For New York sports fans, if you aren’t in New York, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore will be your weekend home away from home. The Yankees travel down to Camden Yards to face the Orioles for a weekend set, and the NY Rangers face a potentially make-or-break Game 5 at the Verizon Center in the nation’s capital. The Acela should be packed with New Yorkers making their way to the mid-Atlantic.

4. Anaheim/Los Angeles

  • Timbers at Galaxy

  • Red Sox at Angels

Anaheim will be the site of a huge Game 5 between the Nashville Predators and the hometown Ducks, as well as an Angels home series against the Boston Red Sox. The Sox have always had the Angels’ number in the postseason, so there is some residual tension that should make for a good late-April series.

5. Pittsburgh

  • Lightning at Penguins (Game 5)

Not only do the three rivers converge in Pittsburgh, but so do the NHL playoffs and MLB regular season. The Pirates and Nationals are hovering around .500 and look to get their head above water. Meanwhile, the Penguins and Lightning face off in a meaningful Game 5 on Saturday.

6. San Francisco

  • Kings at Sharks (Game 5)
  • Braves at Giants
  • Chivas USA at Earthquakes
Sunday
  • Braves at Giants

The defending World Series champs welcome the Atlanta Braves to AT&T Park for a three game set, but Saturday it is all about San Jose. The Sharks face the LA Kings in a Cali battle as Game 5 gets underway at the Shark Tank. Also on Saturday, the SJ Earthquakes will face Chivas USA in some MLS action. It is LA vs. the Bay on Saturday.

7. New Orleans

There is hardly a better weekend for a Lakers fans to make a visit to New Orleans than this one. Friday and Sunday will feature playoff matchups with the Hornets, who are looking to knock off the two-time defending champs. New Orleans Arena, just like the Superdome next door, can get rocking in support of New Orleans sports teams.

8. Atlanta

  • Magic at Hawks (Game 4)

As mentioned, the Braves are out of town in San Francisco, so all of the city’s attention is on the Hawks. Having stolen home-court advantage from the Magic, the Hawks welcome Dwight Howard and Orlando to Philips Arena for Games 3 and 4.

9. Detroit

Friday
  • Coyotes at Red Wings (Game 5 – if necessary)
  • White Sox at Tigers

  • White Sox at Tigers
Sunday
  • White Sox at Tigers

With the Red Wings leading the Coyotes 3-0 in their first round series, there may not be a need for a Game 5. If there is, Joe Louis and Comerica Park provide some weekend entertainment as the Wings and Tigers take over the Motor City.

10. Chicago

  • Dodgers at Cubs
  • Dynamo at Fire
Sunday
  • Canucks at Blackhawks (Game 6 – if necessary)
  • Dodgers at Cubs

Similar to the Detroit SPW, there may or may not be an NHL playoff game in Chicago this weekend. The defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks look to keep their series with top-seeded Vancouver alive. Also, the Dodgers are in town to face the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and the MLS Fire host the Dynamo. The Bulls are on the road in Indiana, but their presence will be felt in the Windy City this weekend.
