Top NFL-College Football Sports Power Weekends in 2012

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

There are so many great NFL-college football weekends each fall that it is hard to pare down the list. Nonetheless, here are, in my opinion, the 50 best NFL-college football Sports Power Weekends of 2012. The main criteria for this list was that it must include an NFL and college game. There are plenty of great weekends in September that feature MLB games with a great NFL or college game, but I wanted to highlight weekends that included at least two different football games.

I’d love to hear your feedback if you think I am overlooking a great weekend, or ranked one too high.

For more information about planning or booking a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact Jared Cooper at Jared.Cooper@SPWtravel.com, (646) 397-5350, or via twitter at @SportsPowerWknd.

Three games at MetLife Stadium on this weekend, including the first game of the 2012 season featuring the defending Super Bowl champs against their bitter rival, the Jets home opener, and Heisman and top pick front-runner Matt Barkley from USC. Also see Citi Field on Friday as the Mets host the Braves.

3. New Orleans, November 3-5

Saturday

Monday

A rematch of last year’s National Championship Game with the winner in great position to win the SEC West takes places on Saturday in Baton Rouge. On Monday night at the Superdome, the Saints host the Eagles in an NFC showdown.

Another great Thanksgiving option, this time in the heart of Texas. The Cowboys continue their Thanksgiving tradition, this time hosting their division rivals. Top Sports Power Weekends: March 25-27

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

The tides are beginning to change as the calendar approaches the flip from March to April. College basketball season has only two weekends remaining as the NCAA Tournament has reached the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchups, Spring Training will break and give way to the regular season after this week, the NBA and NHL are in playoff stretch run mode, and the MLS just kicked off. It makes for some very significant and hard-fought games, and thus some great Sports Power Weekend options.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of March 25-27. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Anaheim

Thursday
  • Duke vs. Arizona and San Diego St. vs. UConn
Friday
  • Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers
Saturday
  • NCAA Tournament Regional Finals
  • Toronto Raptors at Los Angeles Clippers
  • Colorado Avalanche at Los Angeles Kings
  • Colorado Rapids at Chivas USA
Sunday
  • New Orleans Hornets at Los Angeles Lakers

What makes this weekend so great is that not only are the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games much more competitive and exciting than that some of the early-round mismatches, but you also get a chance to see some of the NBA’s biggest stars on the Tournament off days. Blake Griffin and Kobe Bryant fighting for the Staples Center spotlight on Friday night in nearby LA will be great, as will seeing Chris Paul take on those same Lakers on Sunday. The Honda Center in Anaheim is only about 30 minutes from LA, but with that traffic it could take three times as long.

2. Newark

Friday
  • Ohio State vs. Kentucky and Marquette vs. North Carolina
  • Milwaukee Bucks at New York Knicks
Saturday Philadelphia Flyers at New York Islanders
Sunday
  • NCAA Tournament Regional Finals

The Prudential Center has no doubt been a success since opening just a few years ago, and with the Nets and Devils as its current primary tenants, it has put on its fair share of events. Newark will once again be on display as the Regional Semis and Finals roll into town, but New York City also throws itself into the fray with a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden on Friday night. Public transportation will makes the trip from Manhattan to Newark seamless and inexpensive, and there is no shortage of things to do on Saturday while no Tournament games are being held in the area.

3. New Orleans

Thursday
  • Wisconsin vs. Butler and BYU vs. Florida
Friday
Saturday
  • NCAA Tournament Regional Finals
Sunday

New Orleans is another one of those weekends that doesn’t even need another sporting event to put it over the top. The Superdome is a manageable walk to the French Quarter for some postgame fun, and the food down in the area is hard to top. This will be a great long weekend starting on Thursday.

Also see: New Orleans City Guide

4. San Antonio

Friday
  • Kansas vs. Richmond and Florida State vs. VCU
Saturday
Sunday
  • NCAA Tournament Regional Finals

San Antonio’s River Walk and the Alamo are good attractions to check out when you’re not attending Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games at the Alamodome. San Antonio is a very spread out city, so staying in the River Walk area is definitely worth it.

5. Tampa Bay-Orlando

Friday
  • Nets at Magic
  • Hurricanes at Lightning
  • Spring Training
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational
Saturday
  • Spring Training
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational
Sunday
  • Spring Training
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational

There is plenty to do this weekend in central Florida as Spring Training concludes with its final weekend, the Magic and Lightning are both home on Friday night, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational comes to Orlando. This is your last chance to see Grapefruit League action, so make it count.

6. Phoenix

Friday
  • Hornets at Suns
  • Spring Training
Saturday
  • Sharks at Coyotes
  • Spring Training
Sunday
  • Mavericks at Suns
  • Spring Training

Just like the Grapefruit League, Cactus League action comes to an end this weekend as well. With some many MLB teams training within a short radius of Phoenix, this is a great opportunity to check that out in addition to two Suns games and a Coyotes game in Glendale.

7. Boston

Friday
  • Bobcats at Celtics
Saturday
  • Rangers at Bruins
  • DC United at Revolution
Sunday

The Celtics are fighting for the top spot in the East, and the Rangers and Bruins will just be fighting. The TD Garden is the place to be this weekend with both teams in action and few games left on their collective home slates. Also check out the Revolution at Gillette Stadium in some early-season MLS action.

8. Chicago

Friday
  • Grizzlies at Bulls
Saturday
  • Ducks at Blackhawks
  • Sporting KC at Fire
Sunday

Like the aforementioned Celtics, the Bulls are gunning for the number one seed in the East. They take on the Memphis Grizzlies at the United Center on Friday night, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks take on the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. The MLS Chicago Fire host Sporting KC on Saturday as well.

9. Philly

Friday
Saturday
  • Whitecaps at Union
Sunday
  • Kings at 76ers
  • Bruins at Flyers

The Philly SPW starts off on Saturday as the Union host the newly introduced Vancouver Whitecaps in their first-ever meeting. Sunday sees a Wells Fargo Center doubleheader as the 76ers and Flyers host the Sacramento Kings and Boston Bruins, respectively.

10. Atlanta

Friday
  • Canucks at Thrashers
Saturday
  • Nets at Hawks
Sunday
  • Senators at Thrashers

Philips Arena has a full slate this weekend with two Thrashers games and the Hawks hosting the New Jersey Nets on Saturday. The Hawks will be playing for playoff positioning, bit they’ll have to stop Deron Williams and the Nets to get the win.

Top Sports Power Weekends: March 11-13

Monday, March 7th, 2011

March Madness is officially upon us as conference tournaments get underway this week. They come to a head this weekend with automatic bids and Big Dance dreams on the line. Throw in some Spring Training in beautiful Phoenix and central Florida, as well as NBA and NHL action, and the Sports Power Weekends are plentiful in mid-March.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of March 11-13. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. New York City

Friday
  • Big East Tournament semifinals
  • Los Angeles Clippers at New Jersey Nets
Saturday
  • Big East Tournament finals
  • New York Islanders at New Jersey Devils
Sunday
  • Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks

There are nearly one dozen teams in the Big East alone fighting for a spot or positioning in the NCAA Tournament. With such a high level of competition, the Big East Tournament in Madison Square Garden is the best place to be during conference tournament weekend. Throw in a Knicks game on Sunday featuring their new star Carmelo Anthony, and this is a great Sports Power Weekend option in mid-March.

Also see: New York City Guide

2. Los Angeles

Friday
  • Pac-10 Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Pac-10 Tournament finals
Sunday
  • Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks

The Pac-10 Tournament returns to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, giving the UCLA and USC fans a bit of a home court edge. Don’t tell that to Arizona and Washington, however. They aim to take the conference crown and ride the momentum into the Big Dance.

3. Atlanta

Friday
  • SEC Tournament quarterfinals
  • New Jersey Devils at Atlanta Thrashers
Saturday
  • SEC Tournament semifinals
  • Portland Trail Blazers at Atlanta Hawks
Sunday
  • SEC Tournament finals

The SEC Tournament at the Georgia Dome coincides with Thrashers and Hawks games at Philips Arena in the Georgia World Congress Center over the weekend. Those are some nice options for the Florida and Kentucky fans, among others, who may be making the trip to Atlanta.

4. Greensboro, NC

Friday
  • ACC Tournament quarterfinals
  • Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats
Saturday
  • ACC Tournament semifinals
  • Columbus Blue Jackets at Carolina Hurricanes
Sunday
  • ACC Tournament finals

Greensboro is about an hour and a half from both Charlotte and Raleigh, making it possible to check out the Bobcats or Hurricanes games taking place on Friday and Saturday. No worries if you don’t make that day trip, though. The ACC Tournament provides enough excitement as it is, especially with the Duke and UNC crowds coming out in force.

5. Indianapolis

Friday
  • Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals
Saturday
  • Big Ten Tournament semifinals
Sunday
  • Big Ten Tournament finals

Contrary to much of the outside general opinion about Indianapolis, this town knows how to put on events. With indoor walkways connecting many of the hotels to the mall and convention center, visitors rarely have to brave the cold to get where they are going. Downtown not only features Lucas Oil Stadium, but also Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers and the Big Ten Tournament. The Big Ten is deep and has been cited as the best conference in the country by a number of analysts, so this weekend has a chance to be special.

6. Kansas City

Friday
  • Big XII Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Big XII Tournament finals
Sunday

The Sprint Center may lack an anchor tenant, but that is not reflective of the world-class facility that this is. Kansas City will host its 10th Big XII Tournament, more than any other city, and their event staff will be auditioning for a potential NBA team in the coming years. Be sure to check out the College Basketball Hall of Fame and some of their great BBQ joints while in town.

7. Phoenix

Friday
  • Spring Training
Saturday
  • Spring Training
Sunday
  • Magic at Suns
  • Spring Training

While the top college basketball conference tournaments dominated the first six spots on the list, a familiar entry makes it way in at number seven. Cactus League action in the Phoenix area is a great way to whet your appetite for Opening Day, and Sunday brings a change in gears as the Orlando Magic head west to play the Suns at the US Airways Center.

8. Tampa Bay

Friday
  • Senators at Lightning
  • Spring Training
Saturday
  • Spring Training
Sunday
  • Spring Training

The St. Pete Times Forum will be the place to be on Friday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning push for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, Grapefruit League action in Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater make for a relaxing and fun rest of the weekend.

9. Washington, D.C.

Friday
  • Hurricanes at Capitals
Saturday
  • Clippers at Wizards
Sunday
  • Blackhawks at Capitals

The Verizon Center will get plenty of play this weekend with two Capitals games bracketing a Wizards game on Saturday. You will get a chance to see some of the brightest stars in sports as Alex Ovechkin takes the ice twice for Caps, and rookie phenoms John Wall and Blake Griffin hit the hardwood as the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Wizards.

10. Las Vegas

Friday
  • Mountain West Tournament semifinals
  • WAC Tournament semifinals
Saturday
  • Mountain West Tournament finals
  • WAC Tournament finals
Sunday

The MWC and WAC both hold their conference tournaments in Las Vegas, in the Thomas & Mack Center and Orleans Arena, respectively. I would suspect that fans heading to these tournaments are doing so more for the location than the basketball itself, but to each his own. Enjoy the festivities.

San Antonio once again appears in this space as a result of the NBA-best Spurs. They play perhaps the two most exciting and followed teams in the league as the Big Three of the Miami Heat come to town on Friday night and Kobe Bryant leads the Lakers to town on Sunday. On Sunday, John Wall and the Washington Wizards face the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

9. Raleigh

Friday
Saturday
  • Duke at UNC
Sunday
  • Florida State at NC State

It wouldn’t be rivalry week in college basketball if Duke and UNC weren’t going at it. This time they meet in Chapel Hill, a 30-minute drive from Raleigh where NC State will host Florida State on Sunday. Duke and UNC played a great game in their last meeting at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the third meeting may take place next week at the ACC Tournament.

3. Pittsburgh

Friday
  • Sabres at Penguins
Saturday
  • Cincinnati at Pittsburgh
Sunday
  • Michigan at Penn State

With the Pittsburgh Steelers looking for their record seventh Super Bowl title, Pittsburgh will be buzzing about the big game. 4. Philadelphia

Friday
  • Knicks at 76ers
Saturday
  • Stars at Flyers
  • West Virginia at Villanova
  • Rhode Island at Temple
Sunday

Basketball now reigns supreme in Philly with the NFL season over and the Phillies weeks away from taking the field. The Sixers host the New York Knicks on Friday night, and West Virginia visits an always-strong Villanova squad the next day. The Flyers take the ice against the Stars on Saturday as well.

5. New York

Friday
  • Panthers at Devils
Saturday
  • Senators at Islanders
  • UConn at Seton Hall
Sunday
  • 76ers at Knicks
  • Pacers at Nets

You can make this an all New Jersey SPW if you choose, with the Devils, Seton Hall and the Nets hosting games on Friday through Sunday. It is a Knicks game on Sunday against the visiting Sixers that serves as the centerpiece for this weekend, however.

6. Washington, D.C.

Friday
  • Magic at Wizards
Saturday
  • Hawks at Wizards
  • Wake Forest at Maryland
  • Providence at Georgetown
Sunday
  • Penguins at Capitals

With all the exciting NBA and college basketball action taking place in the D.C. area, it is the Winter Classic rematch of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals that makes this weekend so strong. If Sidney Crosby is back on the ice, the matchup between him and Alex Ovechkin actually overshadows two Wizards games and college basketball action at Maryland and Georgetown.

  • Arizona State at Stanford
Sunday

The Bay Area provides some star power with the NBA best San Antonio Spurs traveling to northern California to face the Sacramento Kings in the state’s capital, and Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls taking on Monta Ellis and the Warriors in Oakland. Cal and Stanford also host the Arizona schools in Pac-10 action on Saturday.

9. Miami

Friday
Saturday
  • Virginia at Miami
Sunday
  • Clippers at Heat

Let Virginia at Miami on Saturday serve as an ACC appetizer for Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers taking their talents to South Beach to visit the Big Three of LeBron, DWade and Bosh and the Miami Heat. Miami is not a bad place to be in early February, to say the least.

10. Milwaukee

Friday
Saturday
  • Pistons at Bucks
Sunday
  • Michigan State at Wisconsin

Just like in Pittsburgh this weekend, Super Bowl XLV is all the rage. Warm up your weekend in frigid Wisconsin with the Detroit Pistons-Milwaukee Bucks game on Saturday. Sunday would be all about the Green Bay Packers if not for a sure-to-be hard-fought Big Ten battle between perennial powers Michigan State and Wisconsin in Madison. The state motto may be changed this weekend to Go, Pack, Go!

Top Sports Power Weekends: January 28-30

Monday, January 24th, 2011

In the off-week between the AFC & NFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl, other leagues get a chance to show off and claim some of the spotlight. The NHL rarely one-ups the NFL, but with their All-Star Games going head-to-head, the NHL actually brings more intrigue with their new game format. The Pro Bowl will out-rate the NHL All-Star Game – and it won’t even be close – but Raleigh is where sports fans want to be on this weekend.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of January 28-30. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Raleigh

Friday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend
Saturday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend
  • NC State at UNC
  • Virginia at Wake Forest
Sunday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend

Raleigh is the place to be in the sports world this weekend as January comes to close. In addition to NHL All-Star Weekend, which features a three-day NHL Fan Fair, the NHL Superskills Competition on Saturday night, and the All-Star game on Sunday evening, UNC will be facing in-state rival NC State at the Dean Dome. The city will most certainly be buzzing.

2. New York City

Friday
  • Millrose Games at MSG
Saturday
  • Pitt at Rutgers
Sunday
  • Pistons at Knicks
  • Duke at St. John’s (MSG)
  • Providence at Seton Hall

If it seems like New York is always near the top of this list, it’s because it is. There are so many teams and games overlapping that New York City is a Sports Power Weekender’s dream. The Millrose Games don’t have the same cache that they did a few decades ago, but it is still worth checking out. Some Big East basketball at the RAC on Saturday will prepare you for a Madison Square Garden double-dose on Sunday.

3. Los Angeles

Friday
  • Kings at Lakers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open
Saturday
  • Bobcats at Clippers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open
Sunday
  • Celtics at Lakers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open

The NBA Finals rematch (and maybe preview) on Sunday between the Celtics and Lakers headlines the weekend, but Blake Griffin is making the Clippers a must-see on Saturday. The Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines about two hours south of Los Angeles could make for a good day trip.

4. Honolulu

Friday
Saturday
Sunday
  • AFC-NFC Pro Bowl

If you are talking vacation spots, Honolulu would top this list at the end of January. In terms of Sports Power Weekends, this option drops a bit because it is a one-trick pony. That one-trick happens to be the second-to-last NFL game of the season, though. The Pro Bowl returns to its rightful place in Honolulu in 2011 and 2012. Enjoy the beach and an afternoon in Aloha Stadium on Sunday.

5. Chicago

Friday
  • Magic at Bulls
Saturday
  • Pacers at Bulls
  • Ohio State at Northwestern
Sunday

The rejuvenated Orlando Magic take on a somewhat overlooked Bulls team that is near the top of the East. On Saturday, top-ranked Ohio State and potential 2011 NBA Draft top pick Jared Sullinger travel to Evanston to take on the Northwestern Wildcats.

6. Phoenix

Friday
  • Celtics at Suns
Saturday
  • USC at Arizona
  • UCLA at Arizona State
Sunday
  • Hornets at Suns

The Pac-10 may be down this year, but Arizona and UCLA still have NBA-level talent. You can see either on Saturday, after checking out the Boston Celtics and their Big Four face Steve Nash and the Suns on Friday. On Sunday, Chris Paul and Nash clash. That should be fun.

7. San Francisco

Friday
  • Bobcats at Warriors
Saturday
  • Hornets at Kings
  • Oregon State at Stanford
  • Oregon at Cal
Sunday
  • Jazz at Warriors

The Bay Area is on display as the Warriors take on the Charlotte Bobcats in Oakland, the Kings host Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets in Sacramento, and Stanford and Cal host Pac-10 games in Palo Alto and Berkeley, respectively. Get familiar with CalTrain!

8. Atlanta

Friday
  • Knicks at Hawks
Saturday
Sunday
  • Maryland at Georgia Tech

The Knicks visit the Hawks on Friday, and Maryland travels to Georgia Tech on Sunday for an ACC battle. Exciting basketball games make Atlanta a good visit on this weekend.

9. Salt Lake City

Friday
  • Timberwolves at Jazz
Saturday
  • Colorado State at Utah
Sunday

Two of the best young players in the NBA, Kevin Love and Deron Williams will take the court as the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz face off on Friday. Saturday sees a college basketball clash between Colorado State and the Utes. Mix in some skiing, and you have yourself a Sports Power Weekend.

10. Oklahoma City

Friday
  • Wizards at Thunder
Saturday
Sunday
  • Heat at Thunder

Oklahoma City cracks the list because of the talent on the court on Friday and Sunday as Kevin Durant and the Thunder take on John Wall and the Wizards, and LeBron, Wade, Bosh and the Miami Heat.
