Top Sports Power Weekends: February 11-13

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

There is no time for a Super Bowl XLV hangover. There are just too many good sports weekends on the horizon, especially with Spring Training set to start shortly. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, you’ll see that there is no love lost between some of the teams meeting this weekend.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of February 11-13. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Boston

Friday
  • Red Wings at Bruins
Saturday
  • Maryland at Boston College
Sunday
  • Heat at Celtics
  • Providence at UConn
Monday
  • Beanpot Finals

Fans of tradition and old-time hockey will love the meeting between two of the Original Six on Friday night, and the Beanpot Tournament Finals on Monday. Oh yeah, the Celtics are also hosting the Miami Heat on Sunday in a potential Eastern Conference Finals preview.

2. New York

Friday
  • Lakers at Knicks
  • Penguins at Islanders
  • Sharks at Devils
Saturday
  • Knicks at Nets
  • Seton Hall at Rutgers
Sunday
  • Penguins at Rangers

It is always a show when Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers visit Madison Square Garden, and Friday night will be no different. A different superstar makes a visit to the World’s Most Famous Arena on Sunday as Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Rangers.

3. San Francisco

Friday
  • Pebble Beach Pro-Am
  • SAP Open Tennis
Saturday
  • Thunder at Kings
  • Pebble Beach Pro-Am
  • SAP Open Tennis
Sunday
  • Thunder at Warriors
  • Pebble Beach Pro-Am
  • SAP Open Tennis

The Bay Area brings plenty of options this weekend with the Pebble Beach Pro-Am taking place from Thursday to Sunday and the SAP Open Tennis tournament at HP Pavilion in San Jose concluding. There are also two chances to see Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, in Sacramento on Saturday and at Oracle Arena against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

4. Philadelphia

Friday
  • Spurs at 76ers
Saturday
  • Pitt at Villanova
Sunday
  • Kings at Flyers

I, for one, love straightforward Sports Power Weekend options like this one in Philadelphia. A Sixers game on Friday night, a Big East clash between Pitt and Villanova on Saturday and the Broad Street Bullies on Sunday. The Wells Fargo Center is the place to be this weekend.

5. Dallas

Friday
  • Blackhawks at Stars
Saturday
  • Baylor at Texas
  • Texas A&M at Texas Tech
Sunday
  • Blue Jackets at Stars

While not nearly as exciting as last weekend’s Dallas-area offering, two Stars games at the American Airlines Center and Baylor visiting one of the nation’s top teams a manageable drive away in Austin make this a viable SPW option.

Also see: Dallas and Austin City Guide

6. Detroit

Friday
  • Heat at Pistons
Saturday
  • Indiana at Michigan
Sunday
  • Trailblazers at Pistons
  • Bruins at Red Wings

The ever-exciting Miami Heat travel to the Palace of Auburn Hills to face the Detroit Pistons for a Friday night show, and in nearby Ann Arbor, Michigan hosts Indiana in a Big Ten battle at Crisler Arena on Saturday. The second leg of this Original Six home-and-home takes place at the Joe on Sunday.

7. Washington, D.C.

Friday
Saturday
  • Spurs at Wizards
  • Kings at Capitals
Sunday
  • Marquette at Georgetown

Get familiar with the Verizon Center, because this weekend offers three can’t-miss games at the arena. Saturday features a day-night doubleheader with Alex Ovechkin and later John Wall taking center stage in the nation’s capital, and Sunday pits Georgetown against giant-slayer Marquette.

Also see: Washington, D.C. City Guide

8. Salt Lake City

Friday
  • Suns at Jazz
Saturday
  • Utah at BYU
Sunday

A worthwhile point guard clash between Steve Nash and Deron Williams will charge up EnergySolutions Arena on Friday, and the in-state battle between Utah and Jimmer Fredette-led BYU promises to be a show on Saturday.

9. Memphis

Friday
  • Bucks at Grizzlies
Saturday
  • Southern Miss at Memphis
Sunday
  • Nuggets at Grizzlies

Sunday may mark one of your last chances to see Carmelo Anthony in a Denver Nuggets uniform. That can be the third visit to FedEx Forum for you in the land of Elvis in this Memphis Sports Power Weekend.

10. Orlando

Friday
  • Hornets at Magic
Saturday
  • Hurricanes at Lightning
  • Notre Dame at South Florida
Sunday
  • Lakers at Magic

The happiest place on Earth may turn downright testy on Sunday in a 2009 NBA Finals rematch between the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic. Saturday in nearby Tampa the Lightning host the Carolina Hurricanes and South Florida takes on top-ten ranked Notre Dame.

Top Sports Power Weekends: January 28-30

Monday, January 24th, 2011

In the off-week between the AFC & NFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl, other leagues get a chance to show off and claim some of the spotlight. The NHL rarely one-ups the NFL, but with their All-Star Games going head-to-head, the NHL actually brings more intrigue with their new game format. The Pro Bowl will out-rate the NHL All-Star Game – and it won’t even be close – but Raleigh is where sports fans want to be on this weekend.

I present to you the 10 best Sports Power Weekends of January 28-30. To purchase a Sports Power Weekend package, please contact us at info@SPWtravel.com.

1. Raleigh

Friday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend
Saturday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend
  • NC State at UNC
  • Virginia at Wake Forest
Sunday
  • NHL All-Star Weekend

Raleigh is the place to be in the sports world this weekend as January comes to close. In addition to NHL All-Star Weekend, which features a three-day NHL Fan Fair, the NHL Superskills Competition on Saturday night, and the All-Star game on Sunday evening, UNC will be facing in-state rival NC State at the Dean Dome. The city will most certainly be buzzing.

2. New York City

Friday
  • Millrose Games at MSG
Saturday
  • Pitt at Rutgers
Sunday
  • Pistons at Knicks
  • Duke at St. John’s (MSG)
  • Providence at Seton Hall

If it seems like New York is always near the top of this list, it’s because it is. There are so many teams and games overlapping that New York City is a Sports Power Weekender’s dream. The Millrose Games don’t have the same cache that they did a few decades ago, but it is still worth checking out. Some Big East basketball at the RAC on Saturday will prepare you for a Madison Square Garden double-dose on Sunday.

3. Los Angeles

Friday
  • Kings at Lakers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open
Saturday
  • Bobcats at Clippers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open
Sunday
  • Celtics at Lakers
  • Farmer’s Insurance Open

The NBA Finals rematch (and maybe preview) on Sunday between the Celtics and Lakers headlines the weekend, but Blake Griffin is making the Clippers a must-see on Saturday. The Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines about two hours south of Los Angeles could make for a good day trip.

4. Honolulu

Friday
Saturday
Sunday
  • AFC-NFC Pro Bowl

If you are talking vacation spots, Honolulu would top this list at the end of January. In terms of Sports Power Weekends, this option drops a bit because it is a one-trick pony. That one-trick happens to be the second-to-last NFL game of the season, though. The Pro Bowl returns to its rightful place in Honolulu in 2011 and 2012. Enjoy the beach and an afternoon in Aloha Stadium on Sunday.

5. Chicago

Friday
  • Magic at Bulls
Saturday
  • Pacers at Bulls
  • Ohio State at Northwestern
Sunday

The rejuvenated Orlando Magic take on a somewhat overlooked Bulls team that is near the top of the East. On Saturday, top-ranked Ohio State and potential 2011 NBA Draft top pick Jared Sullinger travel to Evanston to take on the Northwestern Wildcats.

6. Phoenix

Friday
  • Celtics at Suns
Saturday
  • USC at Arizona
  • UCLA at Arizona State
Sunday
  • Hornets at Suns

The Pac-10 may be down this year, but Arizona and UCLA still have NBA-level talent. You can see either on Saturday, after checking out the Boston Celtics and their Big Four face Steve Nash and the Suns on Friday. On Sunday, Chris Paul and Nash clash. That should be fun.

7. San Francisco

Friday
  • Bobcats at Warriors
Saturday
  • Hornets at Kings
  • Oregon State at Stanford
  • Oregon at Cal
Sunday
  • Jazz at Warriors

The Bay Area is on display as the Warriors take on the Charlotte Bobcats in Oakland, the Kings host Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets in Sacramento, and Stanford and Cal host Pac-10 games in Palo Alto and Berkeley, respectively. Get familiar with CalTrain!

8. Atlanta

Friday
  • Knicks at Hawks
Saturday
Sunday
  • Maryland at Georgia Tech

The Knicks visit the Hawks on Friday, and Maryland travels to Georgia Tech on Sunday for an ACC battle. Exciting basketball games make Atlanta a good visit on this weekend.

9. Salt Lake City

Friday
  • Timberwolves at Jazz
Saturday
  • Colorado State at Utah
Sunday

Two of the best young players in the NBA, Kevin Love and Deron Williams will take the court as the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz face off on Friday. Saturday sees a college basketball clash between Colorado State and the Utes. Mix in some skiing, and you have yourself a Sports Power Weekend.

10. Oklahoma City

Friday
  • Wizards at Thunder
Saturday
Sunday
  • Heat at Thunder

Oklahoma City cracks the list because of the talent on the court on Friday and Sunday as Kevin Durant and the Thunder take on John Wall and the Wizards, and LeBron, Wade, Bosh and the Miami Heat.
