Top Sports Power Weekends: April 8-10

Major League Baseball enters its second weekend with plenty more home openers, and the NHL concludes its regular season. With college basketball behind us, college hockey championships take the ice this weekend, and the NBA nears its regular season end. There is plenty on the line in sports this weekend, and plenty of great Sports Power Weekend options born out of that.

1. Atlanta

Only the British Open can rival the tradition and prestige of The Masters in the world of professional golf. Augusta is the place to be on Sunday in particular, but the Atlanta area also offers the Braves at home against the NL favorite Philadelphia Phillies, and the Thrashers concluding the regular season at home this weekend.

2. Boston

The top rivalry in all of baseball, and maybe all of sports, is renewed once again as the 2011 chapter gets started at Fenway Park for the Red Sox home opening weekend. The Celtics welcome the Wizards on Friday night, after the Red Sox game has concluded, fighting for position atop the Eastern Conference. In addition, Saturday the Bruins and MLS Revolution host home games.

3. Minneapolis

With the NFL labor dispute heading to the courts in Minneapolis starting Wednesday, the Twin Cities will be getting their fair share of publicity. NFL media members (and visiting fans) may be interested in the variety of sporting events being held here this weekend, from the Twins 2011 home opening series to the NCAA Frozen Four. Much of the sports world will have its eyes on Minneapolis this week and weekend.

4. Los Angeles-San Diego

The two-hour stretch between Los Angeles and San Diego will be littered with sporting events this weekend as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the San Diego Padres host home series, and the Kings and Ducks conclude their regular seasons with a home-and-home series. Also, on Saturday Chivas USA will face the Columbus Crew in MLS action. Even with the Lakers and Clippers out of town, LA is bringing the heat.

5. New York

The New York Mets begin their third season at beautiful Citi Field with their home opening weekend against the Washington Nationals. The NHL regular season comes to a close with Rangers and Devils home games, and the Knicks and Nets get to duke it out one more time this season as the NBA nears its regular season conclusion.

6. San Francisco

The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants return to AT&T Park for the first time in 2011 and will have a slew of proceedings such as the World Series ring ceremony and banner unfurling during their home opening weekend against the Cardinals. Additionally, the Sharks conclude their regular season against the Phoenix Coyotes, the Earthquakes take the pitch, and the not-for-long Sacramento Kings face their neighbors in Golden State.

7. Houston

There is no post-Final Four hangover in Houston. The Astros host their first series at Minute Maid Park in 2011, the Rockets fight for a playoff spot against Blake Griffin and the Clippers on Saturday, and the Houston Dynamo take the field against MLS’ new Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday.

8. Washington, D.C.-Baltimore

The Baltimore Orioles and their fans will enjoy some of the most extensive renovations to Camden Yards since its opening in 1992 over the weekend against Texas, the defending AL champs. On Saturday, John Wall and the Wiz host the Hawks, and the LA Galaxy visit DC United in MLS action.

9. Milwaukee

The Brew Crew find themselves as somewhat unlikely favorites in the NL Central, and will face their foe the Chicago Cubs on the season’s second weekend. Saturday will feature Milwaukee’s best as both the Brewers and Bucks are in action.

10. Seattle

The jewel of the Pacific Northwest takes the last spot on this week’s Top 10 with the Mariners hosting the Cleveland Indians and the Seattle Sounders taking the pitch at Qwest Field against the Chicago Fire. The Sounders provide the best home atmosphere in the MLS, and Safeco Field is near the top of the MLB stadiums and ballparks, so this is a weekend you won’t want to miss in Seattle.
