With August upon us you can practically smell college football and NFL in the air. We’ll have to wait several more weeks for real games, though NFL preseason starts in less than two weeks. For now, baseball, soccer, and tennis overlap to create some spectacular SPW options.

1. Dallas

The Cleveland Indians and their new top pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez will travel to Arlington to face the Texas Rangers for the weekend, but the real festivities will take place adjacent to The Ballpark, at Cowboys Stadium. FC Barcelona will face the Mexican team Club America on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. Barca will hold an open training session at Pizza Hut Park on Friday night, and will also be making an appearance at the Nike store in Dallas, as well as other training sessions at SMU.

2. Los Angeles-San Diego

The US Open Series continues as we are now within one month of the US Open in Flushing, NY. The Mercury Insurance Open will feature some of the top women including Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanovic in San Diego. Meanwhile in Anaheim, the resurgent Angels face their AL West foes from Seattle. In Carson, the Galaxy host FC Dallas in a matchup of the top two Western Conference MLS teams.

3. Washington, D.C.-Baltimore

The Legg Mason Tennis Classic will feature some of the top men’s players in the world, including Americans James Blake, Mardy Fish and Jon Isner, as well as Gael Monfils, Nikolay Davydenko and defending champion David Nalbandian. Meanwhile, in nearby Baltimore, the O’s host AL East counterpart Toronto in a weekend series. Toronto fans will also be able to catch their MLS team in action against DC United on Saturday.

4. Canton, Ohio

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game was cancelled due to the labor uncertainty that has now been settled, but the induction weekend carries on nonetheless. More than 75 living Hall of Famers will descend on the cradle of football for the Induction Ceremony as well as the Enshrinees Dinner. 5. Bay Area

Both the Phillies and the Giants, the two teams that faced off in the NLDS last postseason, added big bats to their lineup for the stretch run and postseason. The Giants added Phillies foe Carlos Beltran, formerly of the Mets, and the Phillies added former Astros outfielder Hunter Pence. This should make for a tense weekend series at AT&T Park.
